Behind the Mountain the Sun Sleeps

Sean Thomas Bell
May 9, 2026 – May 20, 2026

'Behind the Mountain the Sun Sleeps' takes its title from a phrase spoken by Sean Thomas Bell’s firstborn son, capturing a fleeting moment of transition—when day gives way to night and the rituals of home begin. This simple exchange becomes a poetic anchor for the exhibition, grounding it in the intimacy of family life and the quiet passage of time.

Developed over a two-year period, these works reflect a significant shift in Bell’s life and practice. Navigating the demands of fatherhood alongside his studio work, Bell embraces a slower, more attentive mode of making. The paintings draw on recent memories within his growing family, functioning as gestures of reflection and acts of preservation.

Alongside this conceptual focus, Bell has expanded his material approach. While rooted in acrylic, the works incorporate new techniques and processes, opening a broader dialogue around surface, texture, and expression.
