Patrick Mavety is a Newcastle-based painter whose work explores everyday surroundings through urban and rural landscapes, interiors and portraiture. Beginning with plein air studies, he brings together observation, memory, colour and expressive oil painting to capture fleeting moments and familiar places.

This series focuses on the mountains that rise behind Maitland. While driving through the area, Mavety often feels that the mountains are hiding from view, prompting an ongoing search for their presence in the landscape. In these works, they become a metaphor for an ancient land that cannot be flattened, erased or forgotten.
