Exquisite Intangible
Mel Jhey’s practice explores the connection between body, emotion and environment through ceramics, drawing and installation. Her ceramic works are developed through a fast and physical approach that allows material agency to actively shape the final form. Her drawings similarly emerge through an intuitive process, using gesture and expressive mark-making to explore the figure and embodied movement.
Research into ancient objects, sites and making traditions - particularly their relationships to the body, healing and ritual - runs alongside this spontaneous practice. The resulting works move between the familiar and the surreal, suggesting fragments of bodies, relics, organic growths and speculative lifeforms. Together, her ceramic works and drawings trace cycles of transformation, decay and regeneration, balancing humour and playfulness with darker, visceral energies.
