Locked On
Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens presents a powerful exhibition that honours the history of non‑violent protest while confronting the entanglements of climate crisis, colonial legacies and patriarchy. Working with found materials, textiles and assemblage, Dickens constructs charged objects and installations that carry both tenderness and fury. ‘Locked On’ extends her long‑running interest in the politics of presence: how bodies, especially Black and women’s bodies, are contained, resisted and remembered. At The Lock‑Up—housed in Newcastle’s former police station and cells—the work resonates with the building’s layered histories, transforming the site into a space for reflection and resolve. The opening program includes a guided walkthrough with the artist.
