Michelle Brodie
A new suite of paintings by Newcastle artist Michelle Brodie, whose practice explores the emotional weather of the everyday. Brodie layers colour and line to form intimate scenes that hover between portrait, dream and interior landscape. Figures appear at thresholds—half in memory, half in the present—while windows, textiles and patterned surfaces create a web of associations. The work rewards slow viewing: delicate transitions, veiled symbols and painterly seams reveal themselves over time. At Straitjacket the paintings are staged with the gallery’s signature clarity, encouraging the viewer to move in close, then step back to read broader rhythms of tone and shape. Opening day includes an extended meet-the-artist.
