Morphology of Decay
In ‘Morphology of Decay’, Sue Hotchkis invites us to witness the quiet relentless poetry of deterioration and decline found in the everyday materials and structures that surround us . Moving beyond the narrative of loss this exhibition frames decay not as finality but as a transitory state, leading to new creation.
The artwork serves as a visual record of time, by isolating the textures and patterns of such things as rusted metal, aged cracked mirrors and crumbling urban facades covered in damp and mould. Sue reinterprets these decaying elements and turns them into richly textured abstract compositions, through a striking combination of screen-print and intricate embroidery. In doing so she exposes the complex forms and patterns that thrive in the wake of deterioration.
