A rare exhibition from Newcastle-based master printmaker and painter Mike Phelps, Ocean Yachts brings together a quietly powerful body of work shaped by restraint, rhythm and calm. Across the exhibition, Phelps returns to the motif of yachts resting on still water, using mark-making as a subtle visual language to evoke leisure, cruising and oceanic solitude.

At the centre of the show is Emerald Beach (1.9m x 1.8m, mixed media on canvas), an immersive and tranquil work that anchors the exhibition.

Born in the USA in 1946 and based in Australia since 1971, Phelps has worked for more than five decades across painting, sculpture and printmaking. His career includes collaborations with major Australian artists including Brett Whiteley and John Coburn. Now nearing 80, he continues to work daily, despite remaining largely unseen for the past twenty years.

This is a rare opportunity to see new work from an important Australian artist.
