Newcastle Art Gallery officially reopens to the public on 28 February 2026, marking its landmark expansion with a three-day celebration and the launch of the major exhibition Iconic Loved Unexpected.

The celebrations begin on Friday 27 February with Friday Night Sounds, a free street party that will transform Laman Street into a temporary sculpture park featuring works by local artists from the Gallery’s collection. The precinct will come alive with interactive family spaces, roving performances, live music and DJs, food trucks, a pop-up bar, outdoor dining and lighting installations. Inside the Gallery, visitors will also have the chance to preview Iconic Loved Unexpected through a series of special events across the gallery spaces.

Across the opening weekend, a vibrant program of artist talks, collaborative community artmaking, live performances and guided tours will offer a warm and celebratory welcome into the newly expanded building.
