Salote Tawale: The Tide Continues
Australian-Fijian artist Salote Tawale presents a new exhibition shaped by her research into the Lake Macquarie region.
Developed following a two-week residency in 2025, the exhibition draws on Tawale’s engagement with local waterways and mangroves, while also reflecting on the impact of colonial intervention on the surrounding natural landscape.
This research extends the artist’s long-standing exploration of living between contrasting cultures, a theme central to her practice. Balancing interaction with quiet reflection, the exhibition brings together a video work made in Hawai‘i, immersive murals and paintings, and soft floor seating that invites audiences to pause within the space.
Moving between Lake Macquarie and Hawai‘i, the exhibition considers shared ecologies, cultural memory and the shifting boundaries between places, asking where one body of water ends and another begins.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Tawale has also curated Beyond the Waves at MAP mima (Multi Arts Pavilion, Speers Point), a video program featuring works by Pacific Islander artists Morgan Hogg, Sione Monu, Emily Greenwood and Edith Amituanai.
