Suburban Alchemy
Nicole de Mestre explores the transformative potential of discarded materials and the
overlooked resources embedded within everyday urban life. Found objects, industrial
remnants and household waste-all destined for landfill-are collected from the suburban
landscape and reimagined. The ordinary becomes extraordinary.
Discarded rope, wire, textiles and rusty metal become the raw matter of her work. Through
the slow, repetitive processes of coiling, stitching and wrapping, these materials are
reconfigured, yet still show traces of their previous lives. Rubbish becomes resource.
Waste becomes material. The seemingly worthless acquires new life.
This is contemporary alchemy without smoke, potions or the philosopher’s stone. It is the
transformation of materials considered worthless into objects of renewed value.
Sometimes the real magic is hiding in the pile marked FREE.
